Agra’s Mughal Gardens: A Nature Retreat

Agra’s Mughal Gardens: A Nature Retreat

Agra’s Mughal Gardens are historically crucial, and often covered as a part of the Taj Mahal tour package. Most of them have geometric patterns and water features like pools as well as fountains. They were created by various Mughal Emperors as earthly paradises to enjoy some peace. Let’s focus on four of the most appreciated gardens.

Ram Bagh or Aram Bagh

Built by Emperor Babur in 1528, Aram Bagh is one of the oldest Mughal Gardens. It is situated on the bank of the Yamuna River, roughly five kilometers away from the Taj Mahal.

Gateway structures, corner towers, viewing pavilions, and stone pathways are in superb condition. All thanks to ASI’s restoration efforts. Even today, this garden is home to several trees and seasonal flower plants. There is a small entry fee to enter this earthly paradise.

Taj Mahal Gardens

Gardens form the Taj’s base. They are a key part of the 17-hectare complex’s look since the monument’s construction in 1653. And this shows the artistic prowess of the Mughals.

Islamic Scholars believe that number 4 is the holiest. And thus, the garden is divided into four equal parts (Charbagh). Pathways and intersecting water channels split the garden into four equal sections. Cypress and Ashoka trees, flowerbeds, pathways, water features, and landscaped zones give a majestic appearance.

Anguri Bagh

Mughal Emperor Jahangir made several changes in the Agra Fort. He made it even more grand. Jahangir loved spending time in Kashmir. He bought soil from Kashmir and developed Anguri Bagh, the grape garden in front of the Khas Mahal.

The British destroyed the garden. However, the ASI has restored it considerably. It offers a glimpse into imperial life. Like other Mughal monuments, Anguri Baug also has a Charbagh layout. It is surely worth a visit.

Mehtab Bagh

The garden has a typical square shape with four symmetrical parts that have intersecting pathways and water channels. Constructed by Babur and enhanced by Shah Jahan, the place was created to enjoy the views of the Taj Mahal in the moonlight.

This pleasure garden is located on the opposite side of the Taj Mahal, across the Yamuna River. Taj Mahal reflected a super-beautiful reflection of itself in the river back then. When built, Mehtab Bagh had pools with fountains, shaded pavilions, and walkways. It was restored in the 90s.
