Kashmir’s Scenic Lakes: Must-Visit Spots
Lakes in the Jammu and Kashmir union territory have a cultural significance. Some Kashmir Lakes are in a sort of urban setting, while others are surrounded by snow-capped peaks. And you need to trek for a while to reach the latter. Let’s take a look at the details about five such lakes.
Dal Lake
Dal Lake in Srinagar does not need much of an introduction. However, rather than opting for a houseboat stay, you can enjoy a shikara ride more in the lake. You can visit floating shops, or buy accessories and decorative items from markets like Meena Bazaar. The lake has several floating gardens that are full of lotus during July and August.
Nigeen Lake
These days, Nigeen Lake is emerging as an alternative to Dal Lake in Srinagar. The latter is overcrowded, slightly dirty, and full of houseboats. On the other hand, Nigeen, which is also a part of Dal Lake, is clean, peaceful, and offers awesome views. Houseboats on Nigeen Lake are spacious and luxurious. You can also go for shikara rides. Opt for a late evening shikara ride through Meena Bazar(floating market), Lotus Park, and vegetable parks.
Gadsar Lake
Located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, the lake is in the vicinity of the Gadsar glacier. It is one of the most appreciated attractions in the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (GLT) route. If you plan to trek from Sonamarg, you would need three to five days or more. Passing the Gadsar pass requires ample experience and physical fitness. But, the calmness and beautiful views are worth all the effort.
Gangabal Lake
Gangabal Lake is not accessible by a vehicle. It is on the foothills of Harmukh’s rugged peaks. The high-altitude alpine lake is a popular spot for trekkers. The lake is a scenic gem with turquoise and emerald color water. It offers a great experience as a reward for trekking efforts. The distant bird calls and trickling streams would make you wait longer. June to September timeframe is ideal to go on lake trekking.
Vishansar Lake
The lake is located in the Ganderbal district, near Sonamarg. The water is very clear, slightly blue. And this makes it a scenic spot for photographers. It is one of the most beautiful lakes, explored as a part of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Trekking enthusiasts tag this trek as moderate. Yet, it is better to avoid going solo.
